Tomas Fujiwara is active in some of the most exciting music of the current generation. In addition to Triple Double, he leads the Hook-Up (with Brian Settles, Jonathan Finlayson, Mary Halvorson and Trevor Dunn), he has a duo with Taylor Ho Bynum, is part of the collective The Thirteenth Assembly (with Bynum, Halvorson and Jessica Pavone), the trio Thumbscrew (with Halvorson and Michael Formanek), co-leads (with Abraham Gomez-Delgado) the Latin/Funk band Positive Catastrophe, and works with forward thinking peers like Matana Roberts, Amir ElSaffar, Tomeka Reid and Matt Mitchell. Born and raised in Boston, Fujiwara studied with legendary drummer and teacher Alan Dawson for eight years before moving to New York at the age of 17. He is a member of Josh Sinton’s Steve Lacy-inspired ensemble, Ideal Bread, Sunny Jain’s bhangra/jazz/hip-hop/brass funk octet, Red Baraat, and projects led by luminaries like Anthony Braxton and Tim Berne. Fujiwara also had a five year run with the Off Broadway show Stomp and performances with the Broadway show Fela! Triple Double’s first, self-titled recording was released in 2017 on Firehouse 12. “Deliberately seeing double in the cause of exploratory jazz,” writes The New Yorker, “Fujiwara brings together instrumentalists primed to rub each other in all the right and creatively wrong ways.” “Drummer Tomas Fujiwara works with rhythm as a pliable substance, solid but ever shifting,” writes Nate Chinen. “His style is forward-driving but rarely blunt or aggressive, and never random. He has a way of spreading out the center of a pulse while setting up a rigorous scaffolding of restraint…A conception of the drum set as a full-canvas instrument, almost orchestral in its scope.”
