The Great Greenfield DinoFest!
In 1835, Second Congregational Church member and sexton, Dexter Marsh was laying sidewalk in front of the County Courthouse (now CT River Conservancy) on Bank Row. He thought he found large bird tracks. What he actually saw were dinosaur footprints. Through contacts with local physician, Dr. James Deane and prominent scientist and geologist, Edward Hitchcock, Amherst College, it became clear that Marsh was on the cusp of one of the world’s biggest discoveries. Subsequently he spent the next 20-years hauling tracks from the Connecticut river, allowing for the most comprehensive study of dinosaur footprints in the world. Marsh and his family lived on Bank Row at the corner of Hope and Olive Streets.
This is one of several events to celebrate the 200th anniversary and former and current members who have contributed to the life and spirit of our church and community.
The event is organized by PITI Theater Company (ptco.org/dino) and Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA) https://www.dinotracksdiscovery.org/supporting/person/ Second Church is hosting this event.
