Haitian drummer Ayizan Sanon to lead drum circle, VT Shakedown performance
Haitian musician, poet and songwriter Ayizan Sanon will be leading a local drum circle, followed by a VT Shakedown Afrobeat/funk performance. Sanon grew up playing traditional folkloric percussion in Port au Prince and in the countryside. In the early 70's, Sanon co-founded three racine (roots) bands: “Lobodja”, “Foula” and “Sanba Yo”. These bands played traditional and original music with modern instrumentation, based on Haiti’s rich percussion and drum rhythms. In the 80’s Sanon moved to New York and there co-founded the bands “Vodoule” and “Azaka”, performing at museums, universities and in the parks of New York. Sanon’s groups have played with the Rolling Stones, recorded an album of traditional music for Smithsonian Folkways (“Rhythms of Rapture: Sacred Musics of Haitian Vodou”) and performed at Carnegie Hall for Haiti’s 200th anniversary celebration. Sanon has taught percussion for many years in diverse settings, to elementary school students to adults. He has led drum workshops at Caribbean dance conferences, Dance New England, and in schools for Enchanted Circle Theater, among others. Some hand drums and small percussion will be provided, but feel free to bring your own! Following the drum circle, Sanon will perform with VT Shakedown, a six piece band from Brattleboro, playing Afrobeat/funk music from West Africa to Vermont. Trumpet, sax, vocals, guitars, bass and drums will keep all moving to this groovin', powerful music!
