Ghosts and Gravestones
Presented by the Leyden Historical Commission. An evening of historical cemetery tours of the South Cemetery. The tour involves and actors and actresses who dress up like deceased residents who were interred in the cemetery. They will stand by their character's gravestones and tell their characters' life stories, giving attendees and opportunity to learn about the town's history.Two featured characters include Matthew Severance, a Vermont native who escaped from from capture by Native Americans in 1758 and later settled in Leyden, and Harriet Severance, who was born in Leyden and kept a detailed dairy illustrative of life in the 1800s. Guest will travel to the cemetery by tractor-drawn hay wagon. In addtion guest can view the locally produced, 1973 documentary "Root Hog or Die", will be screened continuously at Leyden Town Hall, where guest can also enjoy refreshments. There will Halloween-themed crafts for children. Attendees are encouraged to bring umbrellas, sturdy shoes and flashlights. Registration is encouraged, but not required.
