Greenfield Community College Chorus - Preview Concert: "Favorite and New Choral Music"
The concert, which includes classics from the Baroque to the present, is a preview of a longer program to be given later in the semester. The October 20 preview will include two of Henry Purcell's light-hearted songs: "One, Two, Three," one of the composer's many rounds, and "May the God of Wit Inspire," from The Fairy Queen, a long work based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night¹s Dream. A well-known choral movement, "Go Not Far from Me, O God," from Christus e Miserere by the Italian Classical period composer Niccolò Zingarelli, is based on Psalm 71. From the American Revolutionary period the chorus will perform two of the best known sacred part songs by William Billings, the first great American composer. "David's Lamentation," which the chorus will read in shape notes from The Sacred Harp, is a brief, but powerful interpretation of a text from Samuel II. "Chester" is a strong anti-slavery statement by this Boston composer. Frostiana: Seven Country Songs, composed by Randall Thompson for the 1959 Bicentennial Commemoration of the town of Amherst, continues to be a favorite set of choral pieces in the U.S. and beyond. GCC Chorus will perform "Choose Something Like a Star," the final number in this group of pieces, all of which are settings of poems by Robert Frost.
