SUMMARY:Spring Sanctuaries: Exploring Vernal Pools
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an educational walk at Mohawk Trail Regional High School led by Alia Woofenden\, Climate Resilience and Special Education teacher. Alia has previously worked as an environmental educator at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment\, MA Audubon and the Trustees of Reservations and as a certified angler instructor for the state. We will visit the certified vernal pool located on school property and learn about the unique ecology of these seasonal wetlands\, critical habitat for many wildlife. This is an introductory workshop for people interested in learning about vernal pools. This event will also offer a glimpse into the hands-on environmental education happening in our public schools\, highlighting how students are learning about climate resilience\, ecology\, and learning connected to the local environment. Participants will learn how to identify a vernal pool and about the different indicator species that can be found there. All materials will be provided and no experience is necessary. However\, we encourage you to wear appropriate shoes since we will be walking in mud and wet areas. Register at franklinlandtrust.org/vernals Rain date: May 9th\, 9:30-11:30am
